Something has happened to the Lifestream.
Lost loved ones; fallen comrades; enemies long defeated. Those that should be dead live again.
Five years ago, a legendary SOLDIER and once-hero, Sephiroth, driven mad by the discovery of the experiments that created him, attempted to destroy the planet. A small group of heroes, lead by a mercenary named Cloud Strife, fought tirelessly to save Gaia. Although they eventually managed to defeat Sephiroth, it was not before he had summoned Meteor, the ultimate destructive power.
As Meteor tore through Gaia’s atmosphere and the planet screamed in agony, the dying prayers of Aerith, the last of the Ancients, were answered; Holy, the supreme sacred magic, rose against the calamitous force of Meteor. But it was far too late, and the clash of the two extreme powers only intensified the destruction.
In the end, Gaia itself intervened; using the Lifestream as a weapon, to synchronize with Holy and overcome Meteor.
Meteorfall, as that event would be known as forever after, left a vast scar on the planet, and in the hearts of its people. But amidst the loss and the anguish suffered, the people came together to rebuild their lives. Sorrow, some said, was the price to see it end.
But it was not yet the end. Two years after Meteorfall, the legacy of Sephiroth lived on. “Remnants” of his power, seeking Jenova in order to become whole. A new Sephiroth was created. And, thanks to Cloud, destroyed.
Another year later, and a new threat – a dark secret of ShinRa, the company which rested at the centre of so much of this destruction – threatened to wipe the planet clear of all life by forcing the awakening of Gaia’s Final Weapon, Omega. At the last minute, as Omega drew the Lifestream from Gaia, a final desperate attack by a lone hero destroyed the Weapon and ended its ascent…
Although the Lifestream was returned to Gaia, it soon became clear that something was not right. Faces of the dead began to appear amongst the living. Omega had disrupted the cycle, and the results…
It began when a man was found, unconscious, in the streets of Kalm, a wound in his chest suggesting that something had been forcibly removed from within. That man was Sephiroth.
The Turks were sent to retrieve him, and Sephiroth was locked away in the newly-rebuilt ShinRa headquarters in the centre of the ruined Midgar. Embedded within his chest were two fragments of the Black Materia – the Materia which would summon Meteor. The rest of the Materia was missing.
In Edge, Cloud Strife was succumbing to madness. A darkness possessed him, and consumed him from within.
Kadaj, drawn by the voice of Jenova, released Sephiroth from ShinRa headquarters. Knowing that Jenova’s favoured son was alive planted jealousy and insecurity in his childish mind, and, in defiance of Sephiroth, the Remnant sought out the Black Materia, determined to be the one, this time, to bring about Jenova’s wishes: the destruction of Gaia.
He found three shards of the Materia embedded in the chest of the deteriorating Cloud Strife. Leaking this information to the Turks in order to manipulate them into aiding him, Kadaj pursued Cloud to Junon. There, he managed to retrieve one shard of the Materia, before the Turks could escape with the terribly wounded Cloud. And, during that battle, none other than Aerith appeared. The White Materia, she said, was in the Forgotten City, but if Zack had already found it, they would need to seek him out.
In the Reactor above Fort Condor, Hojo continues his twisted experiments. His current subject: Zack Fair.
Cloud Strife, escaped from ShinRa headquarters and severely wounded in battle with Sephiroth, seeks refuge from his own madness, and awaits an end. Tifa Lockhart, desperate to help her childhood friend, the man she loves, finds herself being pushed away.
The Turks stage a desperate search for Zack, Aerith, and the unstable and highly dangerous Cloud. But with a single shard of the Black Materia in their possession, they have also become a target. Sephiroth approaches ShinRa, apparently without malicious intent, but negotiations are stymied by mutual distrust.
Kadaj, joined by one of his brothers, and sinking ever deeper into his insanity by the shard of Black Materia embedded in his chest, seeks out Cloud, determined to complete the Materia and summon Meteor.
Beneath Midgar, shadows move in the dark of the ruined Deepground complex.
And there is a new enemy. Four Fiends; Gaia’s Weapons, liberated by Jenova, seek both the Black and White Materia for some purpose known only to them.
Key players move toward Midgar. A final battle draws near.
The fate of Gaia will soon be decided.
